Mesothelioma Symptoms

Mesothelioma symptoms can take decades to present themselves after asbestos fibers have been inhaled.  In fact, it can take as much as 20 to 71 years for mesothelioma symptoms to arise following asbestos exposure.1

When they do arise, mesothelioma symptoms will vary according to where the malignancy has developed (the type of mesothelioma) and how far it has progressed (the stage of the condition).

Those with a history of asbestos exposure should become familiar with the symptoms of mesothelioma so they can seek immediate medical attention if they develop signs of the condition.

Once mesothelioma has been diagnosed and treated, it will then be essential to contact the Amaro Law Firm to find out if you have a mesothelioma claim and if you are entitled to compensation for your medical bills and other losses.

Symptoms for the Three Different Types of Mesothelioma

The different types of mesothelioma are classified by the region of the body where the malignancy develops. These different forms and their associated symptoms are presented below:

Pleural Mesothelioma
(malignancies on the lining of the lungs)

  • Breathing problems
  • Chest pain
  • Chronic coughing
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Night sweats
  • Fatigue
  • Hoarseness
  • Sudden or unexplained weight loss
  • Fluid buildup in the lining of the lungs (pleural effusion)

Peritoneal Mesothelioma
(malignancies on the abdominal lining)

  • Abdominal pain and inflammation
  • Anemia
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Loss of appetite and/or dramatic weight loss
  • Blood clots (thrombosis)
  • Fluid buildup in the abdominal lining (peritoneal effusion)

Pericardial Mesothelioma
(malignancies on the lining of the heart)

  • Heart palpitations and/or arrhythmia
  • Chest pain
  • Coughing
  • Night sweats
  • Shortness of breath.

Mesothelioma Symptoms by Stage

The symptoms of mesothelioma can also vary according to the stage of the condition:

  • Stage 1 symptoms are generally mild if present at all. This is the earliest stage when the malignancy is only affecting the lining of the lungs, abdomen, or heart.
  • Stage 2 symptoms can be mild, generic, and easily misdiagnosed. Commonly, the symptoms at this stage include shortness of breath, chronic coughing, and fatigue. At this stage of mesothelioma, the condition may have spread to the lymph nodes.
  • Stage 3 symptoms are more serious and debilitating, with these including chest pain, abdominal pain, and breathing problems. This is commonly the stage in which mesothelioma is diagnosed.
  • Stage 4 symptoms are the most severe, with these including chronic pain, swallowing problems, and serious breathing problems.

What Impacts the On-Set of Mesothelioma Symptoms?

Mesothelioma symptoms may remain latent in some people for much longer periods of time than in others. Some of the factors that can affect how soon the symptoms of mesothelioma arise include (and are not limited to):

  • The duration of asbestos exposure – Those who have been exposed to asbestos regularly, for extended periods of time tend to present mesothelioma symptoms sooner than those who were exposed more intermittently and/or for shorter periods of time.
  • The type and amount of asbestos fibers inhaled – Crocidolite is considered to be the most hazardous type of asbestos. Those exposed to crocidolite will likely present symptoms sooner than those exposed to less hazardous forms of asbestos. Additionally, if greater amounts of asbestos fibers have been inhaled, symptoms will likely arise sooner (rather than remaining latent for multiple decades).
  • Whether mesothelioma has spread (metastasized) – If the condition has spread, mesothelioma symptoms are likely to arise sooner (than if the condition was localized to a single area of the body).
