Background on Nexium & PPI Drugs: How They Work

Nexium and other proton pump inhibitors work by turning “off” the pumps in the stomach that produce acid (for digestion). Unlike antacids that neutralize excessive stomach acid, Nexium and PPIs prevent the stomach from producing acid.

Consequently, Nexium and other PPIs are used to treat various conditions, like:

  • Acid reflux disease, gastroesophageal reflex disease (GERD) & heartburn, all of which are caused by stomach acid entering the esophagus
  • Erosive esophagitis, the erosion of the esophagus due to prolonged exposure to stomach acid
  • Stomach infection caused by the Helicobacter pylori (HP) bacteria
  • Stomach ulcers, which can be caused by an HP bacterial infection and/or prolonged use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a condition in which tumors in the pancreas or small intestines cause the stomach to produce excessive acid.

In addition to Nexium, brand names for other proton pump inhibitors include (and are not limited to):

  • AcipHex (rabeprazole), made by Eisai, Inc.
  • Dexilant (dexlansoprazole), made by Takeda Pharmaceuticals U.S.A., Inc. (Takeda)
  • Prevacid (lansoprazole), made by Takeda
  • Priolsec (omeprazole), made by Proctor & Gamble (P&G)
  • Protonix (pantoprazole), made by Pfizer
  • Zegerid (omeprazole/sodium bicarbonate), made by Bayer Pharmaceuticals.

Nexium and other PPIs can cause mild side effects, like (but not exclusive to):

  • Abdominal pain
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Gas
  • Headaches
  • Nausea.
