Shelter-In-Place After Fuel Tank Explodes on Pelican IslandFebruary 25, 2012
According to many local media outlets, on February 23, 2012, a fuel tank exploded on Pelican Island in Galveston County which created a large fire. The city of Galveston has said that the blast was at a facility near Old Port Industrial Boulevard. Sources say firefighters struggled to get the flames under control. Further, a precautionary shelter-in-place order is in effect for all the A&M Galveston campus and all of Pelican Island. Sources say the Pelican Island bridge has been closes to all traffic. According to reports, the areas around the site, including the bridge and access along Harborside between 29th and 51st streets, have been restricted.
