Takata Airbag Recall

The Takata airbag recall started when Takata announced the defect in April 2013. So far, at least 41 million vehicles have been affected worldwide by the Takata airbag recall.1 Currently, with nearly 68 million inflators, including 63 million in the United States, from seventeen major automakers affected by the defective parts, the Takata airbag recall is the largest auto safety recall in history. From small Japanese cars to German luxury sedans, the Takata airbag recall has affected drivers all over the globe.

Reasons For the Takata Airbag Recall
Calls for a massive Takata airbag recall began when reports surfaced about a defect in the airbag inflation system. The chemical used to inflate the airbags was later found to be highly volatile in humid climates. The volatile chemical would cause an explosion in the steering column when the airbags deployed. The explosion would launch metal and plastic shrapnel into the driver and front passenger seat occupants. Most of the major automakers have issued nationwide Takata airbag recall notices on their affected vehicles, replacing the airbags at no cost, but the manufacturer itself has yet to launch an overall recall.

Injuries From the Takata Airbag Recall
At least eleven fatalities have been attributed to the defective airbags. Hundreds of drivers and passengers have reported serious cuts, abrasions and lacerations from flying shrapnel. In one instance, a Houston man lost his life when his 2002 Honda Civic, a vehicle on the Takata airbag recall list, collided with another vehicle. The airbag system propelled metal shards into his neck, severing a major artery. He bled out and died at the scene.

Takata Airbag Recall Lawsuits
The announcement of the Takata airbag recall has spurred thousands of drivers across the country to pursue legal action against the automakers and the airbag manufacturers. As Toyota announced on May 23, 2016 it is recalling an additional 1.6 million vehicles to its recall list2, the number of lawsuits will definitely increase. The State of Hawaii has also opted to file suit against the airbag manufacturer3. If you or someone you love has been injured, or if a loved one has lost their life, due to the defective airbags, call the offices of the Amaro Law Firm today to discuss the expense incurred from hospital stays, physician’s office visits, lost wages and pain and suffering.
