Attorney R. James Amaro is among the 2023 Super Lawyers®, earning this distinction every year since 2016, as well as one of the Top 100 Houston attorneys, an award Mr. Amaro has won annually since 2020.
Attorneys Matt Elwell and Anna McMullen have been named 2023 Rising Stars. While Mr. Elwell has been a Rising Star every year since 2018, Ms. McMullen has been a Rising Star for three consecutive years, winning this title every year since 2021.

About Super Lawyers® Awards
The goal is to offer a trustworthy, highly reliable resource that the public can use to pinpoint the best lawyers who specialize in a particular practice and who represent clients in a given geographic area.
To earn the title of Super Lawyer®, Rising Star, or Top 100 (in a specific city or state), attorneys have to be nominated by a peer or identified via an internal research process. Attorneys cannot nominate themselves to be Super Lawyers®. Once nominated, candidates for Super Lawyers® awards will then undergo:
- An independent research and investigation phase: Experts at Super Lawyers® will delve into various facets of a candidate’s experience, history, and legal practice, including other honors and awards they’ve received, their verdicts and settlements, their position at a law firm, their community involvement, and their legal writings.
- Peer evaluation: Also referred to as the “blue ribbon review,” the peer evaluation portion of the selection process involves a detailed ranking and points system, in which each candidate is given a series of points based on several factors. Points are totaled at the end to “rank” and compare the candidates in a more objective manner.
- Final selection: Candidates with the highest point totals from the blue ribbon review will be chosen as Super Lawyers® in their category. Attorneys will be notified of their selection and published on the Super Lawyers® website.
Rising Stars are selected in the same manner as Super Lawyers®, except that Rising Star candidates must either be:
- 40 years old or younger; or
- In the legal practice for no more than 10 years
Up to 5% of the attorneys in a given state can be designated as Super Lawyers®, making this a highly coveted and highly competitive honor. The Rising Star distinction is even more difficult to earn, as this title is only granted to ~2.5% of younger or newer lawyers in a particular state.
