After being in a bus wreck the last thing you want to do is worry about your medical bills. Unfortunately, your bills will start piling up as soon as you are taken to the emergency room. This can be very troubling on top of everything else you’re dealing with. If you’ve been injured in any way after the accident, your insurance carrier should take care of your medical expenses. A personal injury attorney can help you with this.
Drowning in medical bills and don’t know what to do?
Medical bills can often be one of the biggest obstacles after a bus wreck, especially if you don’t have insurance. This begs the question, “How do I pay my medical bills?” We’ve listed a few different options for you to consider if you’re found without insurance. Although these options are helpful, we encourage you to contact the Amaro Law Firm for a free consultation to get a full understanding of your options as they can differ in different cases and state to state.
Free mobile and virtual consultations are available to those who cannot visit our offices.
PIP and Med Pay
PIP, otherwise known as Personal Injury Protection, is a particular insurance you can get as an extension of your auto insurance. PIP is mandatory in 13 states to diminish the amount of personal injury lawsuits; however, it is not mandatory in Texas. If you have PIP this is one way to take care of some of your medical expenses depending on how much your coverage is. PIP is like Med Pay, “Medical Payments to Others”, in the fact that it doesn’t matter who the at fault party is. Both will cover your expenses either way. However, Med Pay is different because it only covers expenses directly related to the accident whereas PIP will cover a wide range of things dependent upon the state in which you reside. The average coverage of Med Pay is typically below $25, 000.
The “Hold Agreement”
Some medical providers will work with you. If you’re unable to pay your medical bill and are currently going through a lawsuit, some medical providers will agree to hold off on sending your bill to the collection agency with the understanding that you’ll pay upon receiving your settlement.
Non-Profit Hospitals
You could go to a non-profit hospital afterwards if your injuries aren’t severe enough to be taken from the scene in an ambulance. However, if you’re suffering extreme injuries, don’t wait to find a non-profit hospital. The most important thing is getting the treatment you need immediately. The rest can be figured out later.
Medicaid/Medicare
Medicaid and Medicare are also options if you qualify. However, these are only “last resort options”. Medicare and Medicaid are required to pay your medical expenses if you’re covered by either. If you still have a remaining coverage from your PIP or Med Pay, you will have to use that coverage first.
Maintain Medical Bills and Receipts
Make sure that you’re keeping all of your medical bills and receipts in a file, ready to provide when needed. These include hospital bills, doctor’s visit bills, receipts for any medication related to the accident, as well as receipts for assistive medical devices.
If you find yourself in this position you shouldn’t have to go through this alone. The Amaro Law Firm is here to assist you during this troubling time.
