What Causes Mesothelioma Lung Cancer?

What Causes Mesothelioma Lung Cancer?

Mesothelioma, like other cancers, does not have just one sole cause. A combination of factors contributes to the development of mesothelioma lung cancer, including:

  • Asbestos exposure
  • Radiation exposure
  • Genetic factors
  • Lifestyle habits
  • And more.

Of these, asbestos exposure presents the greatest risk of mesothelioma. In fact, experts say that at least 3 in every 4 mesothelioma patients have a history of asbestos exposure.1

How Does Asbestos Exposure Cause Mesothelioma?

Ingesting asbestos fibers is how exposure can contribute to mesothelioma. For most people, this means inhaling airborne asbestos fibers. That can happen when:

  • Using products or equipment that contain asbestos
  • Working around asbestos-containing products that are damaged or destroyed, like during a fire, demolition, or construction activities
  • Manufacturing products that contain asbestos
  • Mining talcum or asbestos.

Once inhaled, asbestos fibers will damage and irritate the lungs and possibly other internal organs. Over time, that can cause permanent damage on a cellular level, potentially triggering mesothelioma.

Here, it’s important to note that asbestos exposure can either be:

  • Primary: This involves direct contact with the source of asbestos, which could be anything from drywall, paint, and flooring materials to fireproof gear, talcum powder, auto parts, and several other items.
  • Secondary: When a person has been directly exposed to asbestos and then carries home asbestos fibers on his clothing or hair (for example), the people he lives with can experience secondary asbestos exposure.

Both forms of asbestos exposure can increase the risk of developing mesothelioma.

How Do I Know What Caused My Mesothelioma?

Determining the cause of your mesothelioma will likely be a complicated process. That’s because it can take some additional research, testing, and investigation to uncover details like (but not limited to):

  • Your work history: For most mesothelioma patients, asbestos exposure has occurred on the job. As a result, reviewing your employment history is crucial to determining if on-the-job asbestos exposure has occurred and, if so, how it likely happened.
  • Your history of asbestos exposure: This can include investigating places you have lived, products you have regularly used, and other potential mechanisms of asbestos exposure that are unrelated to past or current jobs.

Some of the various items may be helpful to find and review as part of this process can include:

  • Medical records and lab tests
  • Employer records and employee handbooks
  • Earnings records
  • Statements from witnesses
  • Expert opinions

Why Does the Cause of My Mesothelioma Matter?

Knowing the cause of your mesothelioma is critical to determining:

  • Your legal options: Depending on what caused your mesothelioma, you may have more than one claim, and you may be able to file a case against a current or former employer, a product manufacturer, and/or some other party.
  • Your potential rights to mesothelioma compensation: A mesothelioma settlement from a case can be just one option for compensation. If workplace asbestos exposure contributed to your condition, you may also be eligible for workers’ compensation benefits. Similarly, if you were exposed to asbestos while serving in the military, you may be eligible for veterans’ benefits.
