Update: Federal Judge Approves Deepwater Horizon Medical SettlementJanuary 14, 2013
On Friday January 11, 2013, a federal judge in Louisiana gave his final approval to the Deepwater Horizon Medical Settlement. The settlement is between BP and as many as 100,000 cleanup workers who responded to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. These individuals were exposed to a variety of toxic chemicals during the cleanup and many experienced adverse medical conditions. There are 2 classes of claimants who may seek compensation under the BP medical settlement: 1) cleanup workers, 2) residents in certain geographic zones.
Depending on the medical conditions of the claimants, the compensation is up to $60,700.00 per claimant for certain chronic medical conditions. Also, the BP medical settlement provides for future medical consultation in an outreach program for qualified individuals. No qualified settlements will be made by the BP claims administration until any and all appeals are resolved.
