Software Glitch Leads to More Lime Electric Scooter Accidents & Injuries

Software Glitch Leads to More Lime Electric Scooter Accidents & Injuries

At least 155 riders of Lime scooters have reported sudden braking mid-ride, with at least 30 suffering injuries, ranging from cuts to broken jawbones.

The sudden braking, reported by riders in Auckland, New Zealand, was caused by a software glitch that would trigger scooters to stop unexpectedly when going downhill at high speeds and hitting an obstacle.

According to Lime, they:

developed a series of updates for the firmware and are confident in their efficacy. We have already rolled out some of the firmware fixes, which immediately resulted in a material reduction of occurrences.  A final update is now being dispatched to every Lime scooter in the market and will be complete shortly.

Tragically, this is just the latest development in a growing legacy of safety issues and serious concerns regarding electric scooters.

Faulty Software Also Causes Scooter Accidents in Switzerland

In January 2019, Lime pulled its entire fleet of scooters from Switzerland, following many reports of sudden braking throwing riders off scooters and causing injuries. Lime did confirm that this software glitch was the same as the one Auckland riders experienced. It did not, however, confirm whether riders in other countries have reported the same problem.

Other Electric Scooter Problems

Beyond the software glitches, other problems have plagued electric scooters in general, not just those from Lime. These problems have included (and aren’t limited to):

  • Motor problems
  • Sticky accelerators
  • Combusting batteries
  • Malfunctioning throttles

Design flaws, like short wheelbases and small wheels, also make these modes of transportation inherently risky and unstable. Compounding these issues can be a lack of proper maintenance, as well as vandalism when scooters are parked on the street.

It’s no wonder, then, that emergency rooms in some areas, like Salt Lake City, have seen a 161 percent surge in visits due solely to e-scooter injuries.

How to Recover from an Electric Scooter Accident: Your Legal Options

Following an electric scooter accident, consulting a lawyer is the key to finding out if you have a legal claim against parities like (but not necessarily limited to):

  • Other motorists
  • Scooter rental companies
  • Manufacturers of electric scooters
  • Parties that maintain e-scooters.

While riders usually have to sign onerous user agreements when renting these scooters, that does NOT negate victims’ legal rights or total liability when other drivers, scooter defects, and more cause serious accidents and injuries. The best way to get justice, hold the liable parties accountable, and recover is to contact the Amaro Law Firm.
