Jury Awards 10.5 M After 3 Die Falling From High-Rise PlatformJuly 21, 2011
The families of three workers who fell 11 floors to their death and another worker who survived by clinging to the building were awarded $10.5 million. The three men were doing stucco work on the outside of a high-rise apartment complex in Austin. They were working on an American Mast Climbers platform when it suddenly collapsed. Only one man survived by grabbing onto a balcony and pulling himself to safety. The families claimed that the mast climber was in poor condition with many rusted or damaged parts and the platform was attached with bolts that were too small. The plaintiff's engineering expert described the accident as a catastrophic failure of the equipment.
