Defective Telescoping Ladders Recalled Due to Fall Hazard, Serious Injury Risk

Defective Ladders Recalled Due to Fall Hazard, Injury Risk | Dangerous Products Lawyer

Werner has voluntarily recalled about 78,000 aluminum telescoping ladders due to the risk of failure. The recalled ladders reportedly have defects that can cause them to break while they are in use. Given that these ladders range from 13 to 26 feet in size, the defect presents a serious risk of falls and injury.

In June 2018 when this recall was first announced, Werner admitted that one person had reported serious injuries from a ladder collapse. Since then, more people reported injuries from these defective ladders.

2018 Werner Ladder Recall: Brief Background

The Werner ladder recall affects multi-purpose aluminum telescoping ladders that were sold at Home Depot and Lowe’s stores across the U.S. from April 2018 to May 2018.  The model numbers of the recalled ladders, which are on the side rail label, are:

  • MT-IAA-13A
  • MT-IAA-17A
  • MT-IAA-22A
  • MT-IAA-26
  • MT-IAA-26A

These recalled ladders have five different positions: twin step ladder, stairway step ladder, extension ladder, wall ladder, and as two scaffold bases. Werner has not specified whether any particular position is more prone to failure and falls.

The company has, however, stated that at least one person has reported falling and suffering side and elbow injuries while using one of these recalled ladders.

Anyone who owns a recalled ladder and who has not been injured while using it is advised to:

  • Immediately stop using the ladder
  • Return the recalled ladder to Home Depot or Lowe’s for a full refund

What Defects Are Causing Werner Ladders to Fail?

Werner has not released details about the nature of the defect. The company has also not stated whether it has received any additional injury reports since announcing the recall in June 2018.

While additional investigations—and/or future lawsuits—may bring the exact nature of the defect(s) to light, generally, defective consumer products are the result of factors like (but not limited to):

  • Design flaws
  • Poor-quality materials used to make the product
  • Manufacturing oversights or errors
  • Failures to test the safety of a product before selling it to consumers
  • Failures to explain how to safely use a product
  • Failures to warn consumers about the risks associated with a product

In some cases, a combination or all of the above can make products unsafe and put people at risk of injuries.
