Attention Hunters & Fisherman: New Texas Law Takes Licenses Digital

If you hunt or fish in Texas, you can now legally show a digital copy of your state-issued license to game wardens, thanks to a new Texas law, House Bill (HB) 547.

As of September 1st, this new law lets hunters and fishermen use their wireless devices to show digital proof of licensure through:

  • The Parks and Wildlife Department (PWD) website
  • The Texas Hunt Harvest app
  • A picture of the license
  • An emailed receipt for license fees
  • An online purchase record

Seen as a step towards modernizing the PWD, this new law will effectively codify what’s already a widespread practice among Texas game wardens, as many have been accepting digital proof of licensing for some time.

New Texas Hunting & Fishing License Law Has Extensive Support, Zero Opposition

Unanimously passed by the Texas Legislature, HB 547 now makes it far more convenient for outdoor enthusiasts to show game wardens proof of licensing. It also eliminates the possibility of being penalized for not carrying a physical copy of a hunting and fishing license.

Prior to September 1, 2019, failure to carry this license could result in:

  • A class C misdemeanor charge
  • Fines up to $500

With potential penalties out of the picture and more convenient options for proving licensure, it’s easy to see why this new Texas law has zero opposition on record.

For Texans who enjoy hunting and fishing, this new law is taking effect at the perfect time, right before the fall hunting season kicks off.
