GM Recall

Owners of General Motors vehicles have been subjected to numerous recall notices. A series of GM recalls has damaged the faith of consumers, dealers and investors in the troubled automaker. The largest GM recall stems from defective ignition switches installed in more than 2.6 million vehicles. The faulty ignition switches have contributed to several accidents, including more than 100 fatalities and hundreds of injuries.

Reasons For the GM Recall
The GM recall on the defective ignition switches has made headlines all over the world. The company issued the GM recall when an investigation found that the faulty switches can change position unexpectedly. If the switch gets bumped, jarred, or weighed down by a heavy key chain, it can change from the “ON” position to the “ACC” position. The shift can cause the vehicle to lose power to its safety systems, including the power steering, power brakes and airbag deployment systems.

Injuries From the GM Recall
The investigation into the defective switches revealed that drivers and passengers suffered numerous injuries prior to the GM recall. Since the GM recall was announced, the company has received more than 4,300 claims of injury, including 475 fatality claims, attributed to the defect. GM had established a victim compensation fund with a January 31, 2015, deadline for applicants to file claims. The company has paid out 74 death claims and 95 serious injury claims, with more than 1,300 still under review.

GM Recall Lawsuits
Executives with the company previously announced that they had set aside millions of dollars to handle additional GM recall injury claims. The automaker had earmarked $400 million to handle the impending lawsuits from GM recall victims. Industry observers have stated that they expect that number to increase to $600 million. A number of victims who had received offers from the compensation fund rejected those offers in favor of pursuing legal action against GM.
